For Schopenhauer, “Those who don’t wonder about the contingency of their existence, of the contingency of the world’s existence, are mentally deficient.” We need to delve a little deeper into what is meant by the argument supporting the “contingency of existence”, otherwise called the Anthropic Principle. The proposition goes something like this: everything around us including ourselves, the stars and planets, could have failed to exist, and had it not existed, the universe would not exist and so is contingent. Consequently, there must therefore be some reason it does exist, whatever that is.
